This is what we called a "Pie Iron." We used to use them all the time when I was a kid and we were camping. You have two pieces of bread (white of course) some cheese and onions or bacon and beans in between the two slices, close it, and put it in the campfire.
We also put pie filling in the middle -- apple or cherry - for a desert pie.
In a few minutes, you have the toastiest, hottest sandwich you have ever eaten in your life. I am sure I still have scars on my tongue and lips from not heeding the warnings to wait until it cooled down.
Very nostalgic seeing this. Thax
